TOPIC GOD’S INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL
TEXT: JEREMIAH 35:14
“Jonadab son of Recab, ordered his sons not to drink wine, and this command has been kept. To this day, they do not drink wine because they obey their forefather’s command.”
As an educator, instructional material are any collection of materials, including animate and inanimate objects and human and non-human resources, that a teacher may use in teaching and learning situations to help achieve desired learning objectives.
Prio to this time, God had consistently instructed tribe of Judah how they were supposed to live.
Since they kept disobeying God, He had to send Jeremiah to them specifically with an instructional material.
He told Jeremiah to go to the house of Recabite.
Jonadab, like any good father, consistently set a good, positive example for his people to follow.
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord during the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah king of Judah:
“Go to the Recabite family and invite them to come to one of the side rooms of the house of the Lord and give them wine to drink.”
Jeremiah was to offer them a drink in the Lord’s Temple
because God knew how the Recabites would respond, God trusted them to provide the perfect living example for the people of Judah.
They replied to Jeremiah, “We do not drink wine because our forefather
???? Jonadab, son of Recab gave us this command: ‘Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine.”
For *hundreds of years, these people lived precisely the way their ancestors wanted them to.
Afterward, God told Jeremiah what to tell His own people:
“Jonadab son of Recab, ordered his sons not to drink wine, and this command has been kept. To this day, they do not drink wine because they obey their forefather’s command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me.”
Eventually, God rewarded the tribe called Recabite for keeping to the words of their ancestors, though he no longer alive.
God punished His own people(Judah) because they wouldn’t obey Him, who is their ever-present help.
Today, culture, laws, and values are changing very fast from what God intended them to be.
If there are people God needs in our generation, they are God’s instructional material. Those who will remain steadfast and become God’s instructional material to another generation!
This is a message that calls for a sober reflection.

PRAYER/CONFESSION : Father, make us a people who would stand tall like these Recabites and say, “What the Lord told me not to do 50 years ago, I have kept myself from them.”
